From now through retirement, you’ll never run out of weekend plans in and around Portland.

Visit the Columbia River Gorge to view breathtaking waterfalls. Spend a day at the coast, hop on a bus to wine country or, take to Mt. Hood’s slopes.

Hops rule. In Portland, IPAs reign supreme, and the coffee is better than Seattle’s. A 2011 study found 876 coffee shops in Portland, so at any given moment you are steps from brewed perfection.

Grab a bike helmet and pedal through the city’s more than 180 miles of bike lanes. And specialty ice cream shops abound. Even on the rainiest days you’ll pass someone holding an umbrella in one hand and a waffle cone in the other.

Portland’s winning spirit is infectious. It’s people are friendly and it’s sports fans are beyond devoted. Love soccer? Root on the Timbers alongside “The Timbers Army” from the stands. And The Moda Center at the Rose Quarter — home of the NBA’s Trail Blazers — consistently sells out and has for decades.

Here, going to a bookstore requires an afternoon. Portland is well-read. Powell’s City of Books takes up an entire city block and houses more than a million volumes.

And getting around is easy with 11 bridges spanning the Willamette River. In fact, the city is fairly easy to navigate: the Willamette River runs down the middle diving the east and west. And Burnside Street divides Portland by its north and south.

In Portland, public transportation is popular — and desired. TriMet, Portland’s public transit agency, includes buses, a light rail system (MAX) and the Portland Streetcar system. Avoid a traffic jam or finish a presentation on the way to work — everyone else is.

Dietary restrictions? Vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan dining options abound. You’ll even find some of the best restaurants from a food cart.

And unlike in other major cities, people in Portland aren’t in a race to get anywhere. Enjoy the scenery if in traffic and plan ahead for long brunch lines at local hot spots. Dubbed the “city of roses,” Portland plays host to the Rose Festival and is home to the Thorns, the women’s professional soccer team.

Portland is scenic, clean, alive with culture and completely unique. It’s a beyond fantastic place to call home. In Portland, every day is a celebration.
